Tens of thousands of spectators attended The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational Sunday at Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Hawaii for the first time in seven years.
“The Eddie" has waited years for the proper big wave conditions for the contest to run. Since its inception in 1984, it's only run nine times.
This year, North Shore lifeguard Luke Sheperdson won the contest surfing on his break amid a field of the best big wave surfers in the world.
