The Bergen New Bridge Medical Center teamed up with county officials and the Diabetes Foundation to provide services to the community in honor of Diabetes Awareness Month.
Officials say the goal is to provide free A1C testing, along with education and guidance about nutrition. The
Diabetes Foundation also holds screenings nationwide.
A free screening will be held at the Ironbound Community Action School in Newark Saturday at 9 a.m.
Experts say diabetes is the eighth leading cause of death nationwide. However, one in five do not realize they have the illness.
"Now is the time. Now is the moment. Let’s spread awareness, access and education far and wide. Let’s end the devastation of diabetes together,” said Bergen New Bridge Medical Center president Deb Visconi.
