As the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina draws near, the mayor of one Jersey Shore community is reflecting on the advice he received while on a trip to Mississippi after Superstorm Sandy.
After Sandy devastated Belmar, Mayor Matt Doherty traveled to Pass Christian, Mississippi, to seek advice.
"We learned a lot of lessons, particularly how to deal with FEMA, FEMA audits and the recovery, and how the money goes from the federal government to the state," says Mayor Doherty.
Doherty says that the lessons he learned were needed to help Belmar rebuild. "That's why we've been able to recover so well in less than three years from what was the worst storm this town and state has ever suffered."
This weekend, the mayor will travel back to Pass Christian to help mark the anniversary of Katrina, as well as learn more lessons.
Doherty says it is long-term recovery and housing that he's interested in learning about on this trip.
