It’s a much different look in
Bay Head after weeks of nonstop work to get the giant sand cliffs, which
formed following the winter nor’easter,
smoothed out and back open on the beach.
Bay Head is as ready as it can
be for Memorial Day Weekend, as all access points are finally reopened after
months of closures.
The borough footed the $60,000 bill themselves to
repair the access points damaged during the long duration winter nor'easter.
They may be able to recoup some of the money because that same storm was declared
a disaster, and FEMA funding should account for 75% of cost.
Mayor Bill Curtis says they are not expecting any
federal help as far as pumping in more sand before the summer. In fact, it
might still be two years away before they get replenishment, and now the worry
is this incline will make it difficult for some people to even access the
beach.
“We are going to have to buy
mobile mats, got to make sure they're not
too slippery for people going down and falling,” says Mayor Curtis. “We are
going to have to have enough grip to come back up. Right now, it's very, very
difficult for an elderly person or a young person who has issues walking in
sand.”
There will be mats added
before summer. The beaches are going to be free every day until mid-June.
