A wildfire in Bass River State Forest has consumed 5,000 acres of land, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service. It is the largest wildfire of 2023, officials say.

The service says that the fire is now 50% contained and that firefighters are making “substantial progress in containing” the fire.

Officials say that there are several roads closed in the area, including Allen Road and Oswego Road. Stage Road is closed between North Maple Avenue and Route 679. Route 679 is closed between Route 563 and Leaktown Road.

The Timberline campground remains closed, along with the Batona Trail. No buildings are in danger, according to the Forest Fire Service.

The fire was first reported around 6 p.m. Wednesday, spreading rapidly and encompassing several square miles.

Because of the scope of the fire, six homes had to be evacuated along with 40 people staying at the Timberline campground.

Smoke is visible for miles, especially along the Garden State Parkway heading to Atlantic City and the southern barrier island beaches.

There have not been any reports of injuries.
