The Union County Prosecutor's Office is seeking help from the public to investigate a hit-and-run crash in Cranford that killed two teenage girls.

Officials are asking for any surveillance or home security video showing the vehicle involved in the crash.

Authorities say the two teenagers were riding on an electronic bike on Burnside Avenue on Monday, around 5:30 p.m., when they were struck by a black 2021 Jeep Compass utility vehicle with tinted windows. They are asking anyone who lives on Hillcrest, Burnside or Lincoln avenues to check their doorbell cameras for any video that may show the vehicle.

Officials say the person they believe to be the driver has been arrested, but police want more footage of the Jeep if it is out there.

Neighbors tell News 12 that the victims in the crash are both 17 years old and from Cranford. They also say that the driver who struck them may have also known the girls. However, this information has not yet been confirmed by officials.

The names of the girls have not been officially released. But News 12 spoke with one woman who says she worked with one of the victim’s mothers.

“We got the call last night that her daughter was murdered or killed. Whatever it was and we are here to support the family, the friends and we're just all grieving together,” says Tammy Carbajal, who works at the Cranford Station House Diner.

The restaurant was closed on Tuesday out of respect for the families.

Friends, family and fellow classmates gathered at the site of the crash Tuesday evening to honor the victims.
