Police are still searching for the person responsible for the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old on the beach in Long Branch last Thursday evening.
Chris Whyte was on the beach at Pier Village when he was involved in a fight.
The shooter pulled a gun and fired twice. The gunshots were captured by home surveillance from a nearby third-floor apartment.
Whyte, who graduated from Woodbridge High School in 2024, would have turned 19 years old today, June 16.
Witnesses saw a person handcuffed and placed under arrest by police but so far, the Monmouth County prosecutor has not made an announcement about anyone being charged.
Officials in Long Branch have not mentioned if they would ban access to the beach after 8 p.m. - like they do in Seaside Heights and Wildwood - or mandate teens be with an adult after 10 p.m.
George Nikolis, who lives at Pier Village, says he appreciates seeing police search bags of those going on the beach during the day, but when it comes to limiting access, he’s undecided.
“Especially on a summer night some, people like to take a nice long walk on the beach and it’s a beautiful beach down here," he says. “To have that restricted would be conflicting.”
“I sincerely regret the loss of life that occurred [on June 12] on Chelsea Beach," said Long Branch Mayor John Pallone in a statement after the shooting.
Pallone made no mention of any changes that might be made in the future.
