Hudson County authorities have identified the victim in a shooting in Jersey City early Tuesday morning.
The county prosecutor says that 24-year-old David Jones was pronounced dead just after 1:30 a.m. Police were called to 1 College St. around 12:40 a.m. for reports of gunfire. They found Jones and a 23-year-old man with gunshot wounds.
Jones was taken to Jersey City Medical Center and died from his injuries. The 23-year-old is expected to be OK.
Neighbors say they heard shots fired and then a black vehicle took off.
“I heard about six shots at first and they stopped for like five, 10 minutes, maybe quicker than that. And then they started up again,” said Jersey City resident Nigh Love. “This is a quiet block, there's a college right there. Never would have expected this.”
“I'm really not surprised, it happens every day around here,” said resident Erick Perez.
The shooting happened near New Jersey City University. A spokesperson for the university wrote in a statement, "The university has spoken with the Jersey City Police Department and determined this is an isolated incident posing no threat to the university community."
No arrests have been made. Anyone who might have information is urged to call the Office of the Hudson County Prosecutor at 201-915-1345 or to leave an anonymous tip.
