An arrest has been made in the hit-and-run of Montclair State University student Anna Semioli, according to the Clifton Police Department and Passaic County Prosecutor's Office.
Michael Choynowski, 27, of North Arlington was arrested Thursday and charged with the crime. According to the prosecutor, Choynowski was driving a Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck along Route 46 near the Valley Road exit in Clifton just after midnight last Friday.
He apparently had just left work and stopped at a McDonald's drive-thru in Little Falls. Semioli was walking along Route 46 and Choynowski allegedly struck her and then fled the scene.
Investigators were able to obtain video from the area that provided evidence and were also able to examine Choynowski's vehicle.
Choynowski's attorney contacted the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office Thursday morning and arranged for Choynowski to turn himself in.
Semioli's family is glad Choynowski turned himself in, but says that it doesn't provide them any comfort as Semioli remains in a coma in critical condition at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson.
"We were told he was scared," says Gina Semioli. "You can be scared but that doesn't mean you shouldn't stop and help somebody. So I don't have an ounce of remorse. Nothing."
Choynowski is being held on $30,000 bail at the Passaic County Jail.
