An apparent road rage on the busy summer streets of Belmar led to a verbal and physical altercation that was caught on a neighbor’s Ring video.
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon just after 1 p.m. on D Street between 12th and 13th avenues. The suspect, 37-year-old Anthony Alvear, of Belmar, is seen stopping his blue Kia Seltos as the victim and his wife are seen riding bicycles.
The neighbor’s video shows Alvear appear to land a punch onto the victim, who police describe as a man around 70 years old.
The man is then seen stumbling off his bike onto the sidewalk.
Alvear then apparently speeds off and blows through the stop sign at 13th Avenue.
Belmar police tell News 12 the incident began a few blocks north by D Street and 10th Avenue when words were exchanged between Alvear and the bicyclists. That all continued until what was captured on the Ring video three blocks south.
Neighbors say the man yelled at Alvear by 10th Avenue for not stopping at that stop sign.
One witness snapped a photo of Alvear’s license plate, and he was quickly tracked down, arrested and charged with aggravated assault. The vehicle was seen in his driveway at his home a few blocks away, ironically, in front of a punching bag.
Bicycle riders in Belmar reacted to watching the video for the first time.
“Wow, yeah, never seen anything like that. I’ve not seen someone get out of their car and just hit a 70-year-old man before,” said Rich Brand, of Belmar.
“He should be in jail. Whoever is opening the door on their car, it’s their responsibility to make sure no one is coming, and then he rants on the 70-year-old? Absolutely wrong,” said Mark Daloia, of Belmar.
Police confirmed with News 12 Alvear is at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution and that the victim remains hospitalized.
Neighbors say he underwent surgery for a broken jaw.
Alvear faces up to 10 years in state prison and fines up to $150,000 if convicted of aggravated assault.
