A Newark police officer shot two people Monday afternoon, fatally wounding one and injuring another, according to the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General.

Officials say the officer encountered a group of civilians in the area of Ross Street and Evergreen Avenue around 1 p.m.

Details about what exactly occurred were not provided, but the attorney general says that during this encounter, a Newark police officer fired his weapon and struck two people.

Some in the area say they feel for their safety.

"I don't feel safe with the community, I don't feel safe with no police officers either," said resident Almikar Gonzalez.

Both civilians were transported to University Hospital where one later died.

The other civilian was still in the hospitalized as of Monday night.

The officer was also taken to the hospital for an evaluation.

Residents who have lived in the neighborhood for years are hoping for a change.

"Very upsetting, very upsetting. Like I said, they should come up with a better method," said Lageria Josey.

The identities of the civilians and the police officer involved had not been revealed as of Monday night.
