The voters have cast their ballots and Primary Day is in the past, but the election is not yet over for two Bronx politicians.
The 86th Assembly District race between incumbent Victor Pichardo and Hector Ramirez remains too close to call, and neither candidate is ready to throw in the towel.
With 98 percent of precincts reporting, the contenders are separated by just 11 votes. Ramirez's vote count is at 1,764, while Pichardo is close behind with 1,753 votes.
Pichardo issued a statement saying in part, "I am optimistic that I will be declared the winner of this race and that the Board of Elections will work diligently to sort through all the dirty tactics my opponent deployed to intimidate voters on Election Day to accurately determine who the voters have chosen to represent them."
Ramirez issued his own statement, which partly states, "We are excited to announce that our campaign has received 50.2 percent of the total votes. While still a small margin, we are optimistic that once all the votes are counted, we will be victorious."
Ramirez has not addressed the voter fraud allegations made by Pichardo. It remains unclear exactly what irregularities he is referring to and whether the Board of Election is investigating.
