North Brunswick police are urging people to avoid a local shopping plaza Thursday morning after a chemical spill injured at least eight people.
Police sent out an alert about the incident at the Brunswick Shopping Center on Milltown Road. The plaza houses LA Fitness, Dollar Tree, Lidl grocery store and other businesses, including a salon and a bakery.
"Early indications are that this appears to be a chlorine leak, which is contained at this time, Deputy Police Chief Brian Hoiberg told News 12.
According to Hoiberg, North Brunswick police, fire and EMS crews responded along with a hazmat team from Middlesex County. Police said eight people were injured in total, and six were transported to local hospitals, including the 53-year-old driver of the chemical truck that spilled the chlorine. None of the injuries were blievd to be life-threatening.
Police identified the delivery company as Miracle Chemical Company, based in Farmingdale.
“There are no road closures, however people are being asked to stay away from the Brunswick Shopping Center, specifically LA Fitness, while emergency services operate at that location,” Hoiberg told News 12.
