Several students at a Bergen County charter school became sick Wednesday and apparently suffered heat stroke.
The students were at Bergen Arts and Science Charter School in Hackensack and were running laps outside the school as part of a test within gym class. Temperatures around noon were in the low-90s.
News 12 New Jersey is told that at least five students became overheated and went to the nurse’s office. Some of them started to vomit.
One student told News 12 that she started to suffer from an asthma attack.
The father of another teen, Autumn Dymarczyk, says that she was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center by ambulance due to her condition. Joe Dymarczyk says that he is unhappy with whoever made the decision to make the teens run outside when temperatures were so high.
“I’m not happy at all. I think whoever made this decision for the children to do this today could have put it off until Monday or Tuesday. This isn’t right. My heart is in my throat right now, with my daughter laying there. I’m very upset about this,” Dymarczyk says.
Dymarczyk says that his daughter was unresponsive for a time and still has high blood pressure.
News 12 has reached out to the school for comment, but has so far not heard back.
