Four children were hospitalized Tuesday due to the dangerous combination of rough surf, rip currents and technically off-duty lifeguards at the Jersey Shore.
Five people in total needed to be rescued after being pulled out to sea by currents. The rescued kids were taken to the hospital as a precaution.
A small contingent of lifeguards picking up gear at Bradley Beach was called to action to save the two boys and two girls. A block away and half an hour later, a teenager was pulled from the water as well.
The supervisor of Bradley Beach lifeguards says warnings of the dangerous water were ignored.
"The lifeguards had just gone by, told the people to get out of the water ? lucky enough, the lifeguards returned and were able to perform a rescue," says Dick Johnson, lifeguard supervisor.
