Pemberton Township Mayor Matt Bianchini has lost his re-election bid, ending a tense campaign season marked by public scrutiny and heated local debate.
Challenger Belinda Fontanez won the Burlington County municipality’s mayoral contest, unseating the incumbent.
Bianchini’s campaign faced heightened attention in its final weeks following a chaotic incident at last month’s Pemberton Township Council meeting. Bianchini had to be physically restrained after charging at an audience member.
Following the election results, Bianchini issued a statement conceding the race to Fontanez and calling for a smooth transition of power.
Bianchini acknowledged the demanding nature of the campaign and reflected on the recent challenges of his term.
"Campaigns are intense, emotional, and testing journeys," Bianchini stated. "There are moments we look back on with pride, and moments that teach us humility. Leadership requires learning from every chapter, and I accept this outcome with an open heart and a deep respect for our democratic process."
Bianchini highlighted his administration’s efforts to strengthen local neighborhoods, protect the township’s environment and support local families during his tenure.
As his term draws to a close, the outgoing mayor urged the community to put campaign divisions aside and support the incoming administration.
