Twelve firefighters who died over the past year were honored this weekend during the Westchester County Volunteer Firefighters Association's annual memorial service in Valhalla.
The names of the fallen firefighters, representing six departments, were read aloud during the ceremony at the Westchester County Fire Training Center on Saturday. Their names were also added to the wall surrounding the Fallen Firefighters Memorial.
“These men and women put their neighbors first, ran toward danger when others ran away, and in some cases paid the highest price. A firefighter never dies, they live on in every life they touch,” said James Arena, president of the Westchester County Volunteer Firefighters Association.
Officials say the memorial serves as a lasting tribute to firefighters who dedicated their lives to protecting their communities.
