A Georgia man was killed Thursday morning after being struck by a vehicle while standing on the shoulder of Interstate 78 in Newark.

New Jersey State Police responded at approximately 9:34 a.m. on Oct. 8 to a motor vehicle crash along Interstate 78 westbound near milepost 55.4.

A preliminary investigation indicates that 54-year-old Tony Gilliam of Jonesboro, Georgia, was driving a Ram pickup truck westbound when he pulled over and stopped on the right shoulder. After exiting his vehicle and entering the roadway area as a pedestrian, a Honda passenger vehicle ran off the right side of the highway.

State Police said the Honda ran off the roadway onto the right shoulder, struck Gilliam, and continued forward into his parked Ram pickup truck.

Gilliam sustained fatal injuries as a result of the collision. No other injuries were reported at the scene.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the New Jersey State Police, and no additional information was immediately released.
