A ferry carrying passengers from Belford is under scrutiny after riders reported windows shattered when the vessel struck part of a dock structure shortly after departure.
Passengers told News 12 the NY Waterway ferry Molly Pitcher had just left the Belford terminal when it hit part of the pier's fendering system. One passenger said she heard loud pops as windows broke and glass crashed into the passenger area.
The passenger said the ferry did not slow down or return to the dock, and that passengers from the lower level moved upstairs. No injuries were reported.
Monmouth County Commissioner Tom Arnone said county officials were not immediately notified of the incident, despite the county owning the port and leasing it to NY Waterway.
County leaders are now seeking more information from NY Waterway about what happened and whether the ferry was safe to continue its trip. As far as officials know, the ferry completed its route.
