An iconic piece of Hoboken history is coming to an end as Stan’s Sport Center announced it will permanently close its retail storefront after 80 years in business.
The family-owned institution, which first opened in Hoboken in 1946, shared the emotional news in a social media post, citing shifting consumer habits, changing retail landscapes and declining foot traffic at small local storefronts.
“We’ve held onto our retail storefront for as long as we could,” the company wrote. “There is history here, and walking away from something that has been part of our family and this community for eight decades is incredibly difficult.”
While the physical shop is closing, the owners emphasized that Stan’s Sport Center is not going out of business entirely. Instead, the company is shifting its full focus toward serving schools, athletic programs, municipalities and local sports leagues as an authorized team dealer and sporting goods vendor.
Generations of local residents have relied on the Hudson Street landmark for everything from varsity jackets and customized team uniforms to first baseball gloves and athletic gear.
In their farewell note to the community, the owners left local residents with a message about the future of Main Street businesses: “Support the local businesses you love while they are still there ... Choose them when you can. Those decisions matter.”
