Keyport homeowners are getting a look at the list of toxic chemicals found at a neighboring landfill. Those residents are waiting to learn if those chemicals are responsible for a cancer cluster.

A company called Pacer Partners, which plans to purchase and develop the site, finished testing the former Keyport Municipal Landfill and the Aeromarine plant. Testing of 13 wells found ground water contained,

Ammonia, aluminum, arsenic, cobalt, benzene, iron lead and PFAS and other heavy metals that exceeded DEP standards. Pacer Partners saying in a statement,

Groundwater conditions beneath the former landfill were generally consistent with conditions expected at a historic landfill.”

At the Aeromarine site - where there were worries about chemical or fuel storage - groundwater testing was below standards.

“Soil and groundwater impacts within the Aeromarine Industrial portion were limited to discrete areas that will be addressed through targeted remediation," said Pacers Partners.

This information comes two days before the a community meeting among some of the 400 families who have reported cases of cancer.

News 12 heard from a professor at Rutgers University school of Public Health who spoke about those chemicals.

“Those are certainly chemicals of concern. The risk really depends on how much people have been exposed and that is a process by which the DEP has already started," said Dr. Robert Laumbach.

Results of a New Jersey DEP study are expected to be released withing the next few days.

In the meantime, Pacer Partners says the landfill needs to be capped before they redevelop.

Hot spots will be remediated.
