An 86-year-old woman says she has been trapped inside her sixth-floor apartment at 605 E. 169th St. for more than a month because of a broken elevator. She says it has forced her to miss medical appointments and rely on others for basic necessities.
Frankie Jones said the situation has made it impossible for her to safely leave her apartment. Jones, who is disabled, said she has missed multiple important doctor appointments since the elevator stopped working.
"I can't get to the doctor and I need my appointment," Jones said. "I am very sick and handicapped."
Michael Davis, who delivers food to Jones each day, said he has witnessed the impact the outage has had on her daily life.
"I go and bring her lunch and she told me that this was the second appointment she had to call off," Davis said.
Jones said the situation affects nearly every aspect of her routine. She said she is unable to travel independently and struggles with daily activities while confined to her apartment.
"I can't go nowhere. I can't take a shower by myself," she said.
Residents at the Morrisania building say they have been waiting for repairs and are frustrated by the lack of information about when elevator service will be restored.
"I hope it'll be fixed," Jones said. "They say they will wait on a part and then I don't know the part."
Until the elevator is repaired, tenants say climbing multiple flights of stairs remains a daily challenge, particularly for elderly and disabled residents.
News 12 reached out to building management for comment and is awaiting a response.
