A violent fight at the Horizon Juvenile Center in Melrose sent about a dozen people to the hospital Sunday evening.
The FDNY says the incident happened just before 5 p.m. after reports of a stabbing at the facility.
One mother, who asked to remain anonymous for safety reasons, says her teenage son is housed inside the center. She claims her son has experienced verbal and physical abuse by staff members and says complaints made through official channels are not kept confidential.
The mother says her son told her staff members were moving his housing unit at the same time as another unit when violence broke out.
"It was like mayhem with the staff and inmates and it was just everybody was just attacking everybody," she said.
ACS released a statement saying, “The situation at Horizon Juvenile Center has been resolved and the facility is now secured. The safety and security of young people and staff in our secure detention facilities is our top priority.”
There is no word on any criminal charges or what led to the violence.
