New Jersey residents are facing one of the steepest energy price hikes in the nation, with costs jumping nearly 17%, according to a recent report.

The United States Congress Joint Economic Committee report shows that New Jersey residents paid an average of $260 more in energy costs between 2024 and 2025 — nearly a 17% increase. This ranks among the highest increases in the United States. Garden State residents paid an average of $1,800 in energy costs last year.

The JEC used monthly electricity bill data from the Federal Energy Information Administration to compile the report. Overall, Americans paid about $110 more in energy costs in 2025 compared with 2024.

To combat rising costs, Gov. Mikie Sherrill declared a state of emergency on utility costs on her first day in office in January. The declaration consists of two executive orders: The first freezes utility rate hikes, while the second aims to expand in-state power generation, including solar and battery storage.
