Family members of a man who was shot and killed by a Newark police officer rallied Friday to demand justice.

The New Jersey Attorney General's Office, the agency investigating the shooting, identified the man who was fatally shot as 42-year-old Wali Bey.

Dozens gathered on the steps of Newark City Hall, chanting his name.

Newark police officer Nashid Reynolds shot Bey on Tuesday afternoon just after 1 p.m., according to the Attorney General's Office.

"We don't have our uncle, our father. We don't have him anymore. It's not okay," said Wali Bey's sister, Jevonna Townes.

The AG'S office said Reynolds fired his weapon on two men, including Bey, who were in a car in the area of Ross Street and Evergreen Avenue.

They said plain-clothes officers and some in uniform were conducting surveillance in the area.

"A cop just came, approached him. He was just sitting in the car, with masks on. If a person comes and approaches you with a mask, you think they're coming to harm. So, what would you do?" said Shakirah Bey, Wali Bey's cousin.

Bey's family said they believe he was unfairly targeted.

"Everyone that was involved, we need them off the force. No pension, nothing. Nothing. It's not going to bring my brother back, but we need justice," said Wali Bey's sister, Reta Bey.

Family members told News 12 they're prepared to take their fight all the way to the legislature.

"Trenton is what we're trying to do next. We're trying to get there, too. It's not going to stop," Reta Bey said.

The shooting is still under investigation by the Attorney General's Office.
