Two water main breaks in Middlesex County are causing traffic disruptions for commuters.

The first break is in East Brunswick, where crews are working to make repairs. Officials say the work is expected to be completed around 7 p.m. Until then, detours are in place. Southbound traffic on Old Bridge Turnpike is being detoured onto Arthur Street, while northbound lanes remain open.

Officials have not said how large the break is or what caused it. While heavy water is not gushing from the area, water can be seen flowing into nearby driveways, and with cold temperatures, that water could freeze and create icy conditions.

A second break was reported in New Brunswick, in front of the high school. That location is about 15 minutes from the East Brunswick site and affects a busy area with several local businesses, including a barbershop and a nail salon.

Drivers in both areas are urged to plan ahead and allow extra time while repairs continue.
