A water main break caused some issues along Paterson Street in New Brunswick on Monday morning.

The break happened around 5:30 a.m. between George and Nielsen streets. Some businesses were without running water for most of the morning.

Paterson Street was closed for a time but has since reopened.

Crews were able to isolate the break and make repairs. They also salted the roadway to prevent freezing as temperatures dropped.

Kevin Thompson, with New Brunswick Water Utility, says cold weather can sometimes cause breaks to occur more frequently.

As winter continues, experts say there are some things to monitor regarding water main breaks.

  • Unusual water flowing in the street or along the curb

  • Sudden pooling of water in an area that is normally dry

  • Reduced pressure or discoloration coming from the tap

Anyone who may notice any of these issues is urged to contact their town’s water and sewer department.
