New Jersey native John Schneider leads Blue Jays into World Series

When the Toronto Blue Jays take the field for Game 1 of the World Series tonight, a New Jersey native will be in the spotlight.
Manager John Schneider, who grew up in Mercer County is leading the Blue Jays to their first World Series appearance in 32 years. The 45-year-old was once a young baseball standout in Lawrence before his career took him to the big leagues.
Schneider has remained connected to his roots. Last year, while the Blue Jays were in Philadelphia to play the Phillies, he surprised players at his alma mater, Lawrence High School.
One of his former coaches, Dan Toto, still remembers the young shortstop's talent and leadership.
"He was definitely larger than life. He had a different edge to him," Toto said. "Johnny was the kind of kid that didn't need a second chance, he just needed a first chance, and he took full opportunity. Anytime I would argue with the umpire, or politely argue, let's say he would be right there. The guy would be my bodyguard right on the side of me."
He proudly wears that Jays hat, even as a Yankees fan.
