Local lawmakers are calling on the Board of Public Utilities to take action to protect consumers against potential phishing scams.
State Sen. Jon Bramnick says he received a robocall claiming he had not allowed access to his home and that his services would be shut off if he did not call back.
Bramnick says that when he did call back, he was asked about which property he was calling in regard to. He says that he knew it was a scam and pushed back.
"My deep concern here is that utility companies should not be calling customers on a robocall, then expecting a call back and then the customer is supposed to tell the utility company where this property is. This is an insult, in my judgment, to consumers and also dangerous,” Bramnick said.
The senator says that if anyone gets a call like this, they shouldn’t call back the number but instead contact the company directly to ensure their account is secure.
