David Alfano wrote The Ghost with the Black Eye after his son, Alessio, became obsessed with the story when first hearing it on audio tapes.

"I said to Alessio, 'Do you want to make this book?,'" Alfano said. "'Do you want to kind of create our own version of it?' And after many nights going to sleep with him and retelling the story, we came up with this interesting version.”

He never thought he would be into Halloween this much, but Alessio changed his whole perspective.

"The thought of him reading this with his kids one day is kind of crazy, but I thought worst case scenario if no one ever bought a copy and he passed this on to his children then that would be like leaving something, a legacy," he said.

The ghost with black the eye follows a playful ghost who steals a baby’s favorite toy, sending the family on a hunt to get it back.

But in the end, it’s the baby who’s the real hero.

And to keep the Halloween spirit alive, Alfano is also organizing a 5K race to give back to his Bloomfield community.

The race will take place on Saturday Oct. 18. Those running will not just be competing, they will give back to the community. The money raised will support the Bloomfield High School track teams and help the Watsessing Park Conservancy plant new trees.
