What to know about New Jersey’s measles uptick
The Health Department says there isn’t any risk if you are immunized.

New Jersey confirmed its seventh measles case of the year on Friday. Anyone who took certain forms of public transit last week in Hudson County could have been exposed.
Here are the dates, times and locations for potential exposure, according to the New Jersey Department of Health:
Location: NJ Transit Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, 8th Street, Bayonne to Hoboken branch
Date & Time: August 13, 14, 15 between 9 A.M. and 11:30 A.M. and between 6 P.M. and 9 P.M.
Location: 8th Street Light Rail Station – Bayonne, NJ
Date & Time: August 13, 14, 15 between 9 A.M. and 11 A.M. and between 7 P.M. and 9 P.M.
Location: PATH Newark - World Trade Center Line
Date & Time: August 13, 14, 15 between 9:15 A.M. and 11:45 A.M. and between 5:45 P.M. and 8:30 P.M.
Location: Exchange Place Station, Jersey City, NJ
Date & Time: August 13, 14, 15 between 9:15 A.M. and 11:45 A.M. and between 5:45 P.M. and 8:30 P.M.
The seven cases this year match the state’s total number of cases all of last year. The Health Department says there isn’t any risk if you are immunized.
State and national vaccination rates have declined in recent years. New Jersey’s overall vaccination rate dropped to just under 92% in 2024. Ten years ago, it was 95%.
That means the state no longer has “herd immunity” – making cases like this more likely to become outbreaks. At this time, the Health Department says there have been no associated cases reported yet.
Dr. Steve Goldberg, the chief medical officer of HealthTrackRX, says symptoms could still show up by next week.
“If you were someone that came in contact with them and you're not measles-immunized, you could show your first symptoms as far as Aug. 29,” he said. “The hope is that this person only contacted folks that were fully immunized, and there's a good chance of that, given the high overall rates in New Jersey.”
New Jersey’s seven cases this year are one of the lowest numbers of any state.
