A salon in North Haledon is offering free hair washes until the water is restored.

It's now Day 7 for people affected by a water main break in Paterson, including surrounding communities like North Haledon.

"I've never had to deal with anything like this before," says Kimberly Gerena, owner of Flourish Salon & Spa.

Businesses along High Mountain Road put up temporary closure signs, with no timeline in sight.

But Gerena's salon has managed to keep serving its clients, thanks to some creativity.

"So many people are affected that we needed to do something, just even a hair wash could be so helpful," said Gerena.

They partnered with local business MJ-Aqua and purchased camping showers, to provide free hair washes during these times.

"We're basically going through like 300 gallons in one day just to service people," said Gerena.

Walk-ins are welcomed Wednesday through Saturday and will last until water gets restored.

"There's just residents who haven't been able to take an actual shower," said Gerena. "I know that the North Haledon Police Department has that, but you know, like sometimes, it's just nice to go into a salon where you can have actual conversation and talk about these things."

If the salon isn’t your scene, regular showers are available next to police headquarters, adjacent to Recreation Field #5, with access from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Thursday evening's update from the police department said, in part:

"The Passaic Valley Water Commission continues to work to get water flowing again. At this time, we are accepting gravity flow filling from P.V. Water. Once the system is primed, the Manchester Utilities Authority will be able to activate the water pumps to restore water flow to North Haledon. As pressure begins to return, water conservation measures are required to allow the system to return to normal."

Water is also being made available to North Haledon residents from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Department of Public Works.
