The union representing nurses at Southern Ocean Medical Center announced a tentative agreement on a three-year contract that will avert a strike at the hospital.

HPAE Local 5138 says the agreement includes “enforceable nurse-to-patient safe staffing ratios, wages and other benefits.”

The union said in a release that the details of the contract will be released after Southern Ocean Medical Center nurses ratify the deal with Hackensack Meridian Health, the owner of the hospital.

"This is now the ninth HPAE contract bargained within the past year that mandates safe staffing in our hospitals. Safe staffing protects patients, retains nurses, and actually saves hospitals money," said Debbie White, president of HPAE in prepared remarks.
