PATH riders struggle to work and entertainment during NJ Transit rail strike

It wasn’t the easiest trip for New Jersey travelers from Hoboken into New York City to finish off the workweek, or to get to the first Subway Series game of 2025 on Friday.
There were two hot tickets across the Hudson River: The game between the New York Yankees and New York Mets, and Game 6 of the NBA’s Eastern Conference Semifinals between the New York Knicks and Boston Celtics.
Hoboken Terminal is a crossroads. It’s where some NJ Transit lines end and PATH trains begin. The journey to Yankee Stadium or Madison Square Garden begins for many at New Jersey Transit stations near their hometown. Unable to get to the game that way, some drove to Hoboken to take the PATH.
“NJ Transit pretty much screwed us up with the train,” said Lucas Stewart, of Chesterfield.
“I hope folks can get there,” said Harrison Turner, of Hoboken. “I think the Bronx and Madison Square Garden are both going to be packed.”
At the same time, workers forced to commute a different way struggled with the changes.
“I left work at 3:30 [p.m.]” said Carla Morgan, of South Orange. “You see what time it is? It's 5:15 [p.m.]. I'm still trying to travel to get to South Orange.”
Morgan said the bus park-and-rides that New Jersey Transit is offering on Monday morning won’t help her because they aren’t near her hometown.
“This is day one," Morgan said. "And I'm like, ‘What happened to the people who paid for their monthly pass?’’
“I don't have a license, either,” said Christopher Gamez, of Brooklyn. “It was a little difficult already to get to work, so I depend on New Jersey Transit.”
Those who drove didn’t find a better experience. Hoboken commuters noted more traffic than usual due to increased volume and ongoing local construction.
