Residents are cleaning up their basements that flooded after a water main break in Union County.

The break was at the intersection of St. Georges Avenue and Hamilton Street in Rahway.

"This is really devastating," says Adel Elkheshen, of Rahway.

Elkheshen and his family are left with mud and dirt after water filled their basement.

"Up to my waist and my neighbor was up to here, almost above my height, says Elkheshen. " Just straight out of nowhere."

He says the water main break damaged his sewer as well.

"This is worms coming from the ground, from the sewer backed up. It's really gross," says Elkheshen.

Lori McDarby was also impacted across the street.

"We're eating dinner, and all of a sudden, the doorbell rings - there's water flowing down the street, fireman is at the door. 'Do you have water in your basement?' And I say, 'Come in and look.' And there it was, there's a water main break in front of the house," says McDarby.

Veolia Water says a 12-inch main broke. There is no word on a cause.
