A longstanding business in Perth Amboy called Quick Tire, has been changing flats and balancing tires for locals for 40 years.

But now the business may be closing its garage bay doors at the corner of Smith and Herbert street because the City Council has voted to overtake the property through eminent domain.

The garage and a multi-family house next door butt against the abandoned property slated for a 400,000-square-foot warehouse and development.

Management with Quick Tire now has 45 days to file an appeal in superior court to try and reverse the decision.

Otherwise, they’ll have to close down.

“There are six families that depend on this work. They work here every day and you know the house next door they have four families living there and they’re not caring about that,” said Mikhail Odllakoff, who helps to run the operation at Quick Tire. “At the moment, there are no locations available. We’ve been looking just to have a plan B kind of thing.”

The property sits close to the Raritan River at the base of the Victory Bridge.

Perth Amboy’s Mayor Helmin Caba said in a recent statement, “The developer is paying to remediate the land, create a public park, and turn nine acres of valuable land into buildable property as part of our overall downtown redevelopment initiatives.”
