Hunterdon community members have come together to support one of their own who was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Karim Daoud was detained on March 12 after an appointment to pick up documents to fulfill his work authorization requirement to remain in the U.S., according to a GoFundMe.

The GoFundMe has raised over $90,000.

A vigil was held Thursday night in Flemington to support Daoud and his family.

Those close to him say Daoud is a leader in the community. State officials voiced their confidence in returning him to his family.

"I can tell you right now, we are going to free Karim, and he is going to come home,” said state Sen. Andrew Zwicker.

Daoud’s lawyer did not tell News 12 why he was detained. News 12 reached out to ICE but has not heard back.
