There is history in the making in the Newark School District. For the first time, 16- and 17-year-olds can register to vote for Board of Education candidates.

Recent voting law changes in Newark will allow students to vote in April’s elections.

“I’m happy because we feel heard and I was very interested when I first heard of it,” says East Side High School junior Jazlyn Fabre-Hidalgo.

“There are issues in the community that we do want to be able to have solved, but in order to do that, you have to be the person to step up and take that voice,” says Science Park High School senior Devin Mitchell.

The registration deadline is March 25. The election will be held on April 15.
