Hundreds of people laced up their sneakers and hit the pavement to show their support for families affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

The annual Walk to Fight Alzheimer’s in Bergen County was organized by Alzheimer’s New Jersey. It is the organization’s largest event. It helps raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.

The walk was held at Bergen Community College on Sunday. It was just one of five walks the organization held this year.

Organizers say that with each stop, they are moving forward in helping struggling families.

"This is a disease that really impacts families emotionally, financially. It's just so much of the support that families need is not paid for, unfortunately, by insurance and families are paying out of pocket for all of these costs,” says Alzheimer’s New Jersey president Ken Zaentz. “So really this disease is bankrupting families in New Jersey. That's why it's so important we do something."

Sunday’s walk raised more than $160,000.
