Following a second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, questions are arising about expanding security - especially since he spends time at his Bedminster, New Jersey golf course.
Bedminster Mayor Larry Jacobs responded to the situation through the following statement:
“I expect that in the aftermath of yesterday’s incident in Florida, that we will see an increase in perimeter security around the Trump National Golf Club, and that much of that security will be provided by local resources from Bedminster Township, the Somerset Prosecutor’s Office, and the New Jersey State Police.”
Ryan Wesley Routh was in a federal courthouse in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he reportedly nodded and smiled while talking to his public defender.
He’s accused of pointing an AK-47 in the direction of former President Trump while Trump was playing golf.
Federal prosecutors say Routh was hiding in the bushes for 12 hours.
The FBI says Routh was spotted by a Secret Service agent, one hole ahead of where Trump was golfing.
Officials say agents fired on Routh four to six times. They say the suspect drove away in his car before being spotted and arrested along I-95.
Routh, who is said to be a convicted felon, was charged with possession of a firearm. Police are still searching for a motive.
President Joe Biden spoke out on the topic Monday, saying the Secret Service needs support.
“Thank God the president is OK. The one thing I want to make more clear is Service needs more help, and I think Congress should respond to their needs," said Biden.
Former President Trump will be in Long Island on Wednesday.
