Marlboro police say a high-speed chase involving suspected car thieves was caught on camera.

The incident comes as departments are, once again, seeing an uptick in these burglary and theft attempts.

The chase happened on Sep. 5., while most of those who call Marlboro home were sleeping.

Officers say they were ready for the thieves.

Marlboro police tell News 12 the wild high-speed chase, which began on Walnut Drive, eventually was called off on Route 34 when the suspects nearly hit 120 mph - before getting away.

"It's a loop. It's a constant loop. These individuals will come into town throughout the state of New Jersey as if it's a fishing hole," said Marlboro Police Chief Peter Pezzullo.

Holmdel police are investigating a theft attempt in the Crawfords Corner section that took place 4 a.m. on Wednesday. On Friday morning, Ocean Township police say 12 thieves broke into a home in the Oakhurst section, grabbed the keys, stole another vehicle and drove off.

"We have to be sure that we are covering almost every square inch of this town every night almost in a repetitive fashion," said Pezzullo.

He says thefts and burglaries are down significantly both town- and countywide, thanks to proactive awareness campaigns. However, the attempts continue all over.

Police are calling for tougher laws to be passed to discourage criminals from committing these crimes.

"The common rhetoric right now is that we need help from the top down," said Pezzullo.
