A Fair Haven police officer shot a 27-year-old Newark man suspected of committing burglaries in Rumson Friday morning, according to the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.

Officials say that officers from the Rumson Police Department and neighboring towns were out near Avenue of Two Rivers South and Shrewsbury Drive investigating reports of burglaries in the area.

The burglaries happened just before 4:45 a.m., according to officials.

Officials then say that a Fair Haven police officer encountered two suspects in a moving vehicle.

They say that during the officer’s interaction with the suspects, he fired a shot at one, striking him.

It was not immediately clear what caused the officer to fire at the man.

The 27-year-old Newark man was treated for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

The Fair Haven police officer was taken to the hospital as a precaution but was not hurt.

News 12 has also confirmed that Howell Township police are investigating a series of car break-ins and attempted break-ins overnight. But it was not immediately clear if the incidents were connected.
