A 6-year-old boy drowned on the first day of summer camp Monday afternoon in Mansfield Township, according to Burlington County prosecutors and Mansfield Township police.

Authorities say the child was found unresponsive in a pool around 2 p.m. at Liberty Lakes Day Camp on Florence Columbus Road and was pulled out of the pool by a lifeguard. According to the camp's website, it was the first day of their summer camp program.

Life-saving measures were attempted by camp staff members, authorities say. The child was transported to Virtua Hospital in Mount Holly where he was pronounced dead. Authorities say an autopsy was performed Tuesday by a Burlington County medical examiner.

An investigation is being conducted by the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office and the Mansfield Township Police Department.
