People who make their living thanks to TikTok are criticizing Congress and President Joe Biden now that the president signed a bill forcing the social media app’s parents company to find a new owner within a year or face a ban.
Skip Chapman is the owner of Manasquan-based Kafx Body – a company that makes deodorants, soaps and washes with coffee-infused oil.
Chapman says his business exploded because of TikTok and he worries about what a possible ban or sale would do for his bottom line.
“It is a major concern to people like us, you know? A family of five that now have this new way to support our family that is at risk because 80% of our products are sold either directly through TikTok or as a result of our traffic on TikTok,” Chapman says.
Chapman attributes his success in large part to the algorithm that TikTok uses, which he fears could be in danger if the company does sell.
But he does say that he appreciates the transparency that will come as a result of this controversy in terms of how his data is managed.
