Gov. Phil Murphy is responding to an independent report about how New Jersey handled the COVID-19 pandemic.
The governor spoke Wednesday on his call-in radio show on WBGO. He said that the goal of the report is to “learn from our mistakes” and to learn lessons on how the state can do better in the future.
“When you lose 35,000-36,000 people, there’s no way in hell that you can say you didn’t make mistakes and you didn’t learn from them,” Murphy said.
The nearly 1,000-page report was done by the law firm of Montgomery McCracken Walker & Rhoads LLP and Boston Consulting Group. It was led by Paul Zoubek, a former assistant state attorney general.

The report found that New Jersey was not prepared for the pandemic and “remains underprepared for the next emergency.”
