NJ Turnpike and Garden State Parkway tolls to increase by 3%

The 3% increase comes out to 15 cents more for the average passenger vehicle on the Turnpike and 5 cents more for passenger vehicles on the Parkway.

New Jerseyans will have to dig a little deeper at the tolls starting Friday as the New Jersey Turnpike Authority's 3% fare hike goes into effect at midnight.

Some New Jersey residents tell News 12, "It's too much, it's just too much.”

The sentiment comes from most drivers who are ready to cough up the extra coins.

It's been four weeks since the Turnpike Authority approved the toll increase for both the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway.

That 3% increase comes out to 15 cents more for the average passenger vehicle on the Turnpike and 5 cents more for passenger vehicles on the Parkway. While most drivers say they plan on sucking it up and paying the extra, some proactive New Jerseyans are working around the problem.

"I don't even use the toll...I usually just drive around it, so I don't care,” one driver said.

All this is happening as New Jersey Transit gets ready to charge more to ride the buses and rails. Fares are going up 15% in July 2025 and if your commute takes you into New York, you'll get gut-punched again with congestion pricing.

At least one New Jerseyan from Edison is putting his money where his mouth is and will participate during the public comment period.

"I want to take action myself, I'm going to go this time because I can't just sit on the sidelines,” he said.

Those annual toll increases were approved in 2020 and that's a done deal but if you want your voice heard regarding the NJ Transit fare hikes and congestion pricing, the public comment periods for both of those are happening now.
