CryOut Cave – an art and cultural center in Newark – hosted a Black History Month art exhibit on Saturday.

Public displays of art by painter Kaleema Lewis, poetry performances and brunch were just a few of the things people were able to enjoy at the event.

“Today’s theme is Queendom Exhibit, so most of my paintings are usually of women – specifically African American women,” Lewis said.

The CryOut Cave was founded by Mayowa Okubanjo.

“Her art, just the feeling that it gives you when you look at it, how relatable it is, the colors, how vibrant they are – and then now, when she started incorporating textures – it just makes it feel a lot more real,”  Okubanjo said.

The next event at the CryOut Cave will be held on Wednesday.
