Fire officials say a family escaped a house fire in Kenilworth Monday morning – all thanks to smoke alarms working properly.

The fire on Richfield Avenue apparently happened in the wall of the home, according to fire officials.

While sitting down to have breakfast inside his home, Ed Radzion said he started smelling smoke. He says he alerted his wife, thinking she may have been doing something that created the odor. Radzion says they both realized something wasn't right with what they saw.

“We saw some smoke coming out of the wall,” Radzion said. “So, she got on the phone, called 911 and they came over. I went outside and I felt along the walls, and it was right by where our electric comes into the house."

Radzion, his wife Lisa and their dog Charlie all escaped unharmed. There is no word on the cause of the fire as the investigation continues.
