A crossing guard was struck by a vehicle Monday in Bayonne, and police are looking for the driver of the car that allegedly hit her.

According to authorities, it happened around 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of West 56th Street and Ave C.

Officials say that the 63-year-old crossing guard was struck by a white four-door sedan while returning to the sidewalk after helping children cross the street when the driver turned left onto Ave C.

The woman hit the hood of the vehicle and then fell onto the street.  The victim complained of back pain and was taken to an area hospital.

Witnesses say that they did see the male driver getting out of the car and helping the victim. But as police confirmed, he then fled the scene.

“I figured he was going to stay here until the police came and everything and then he quietly slipped across the street.  I tried to take a picture, but he was gone,” said Mike Feuer, who says he has been trying to get a traffic light on this intersection for many years.

No children were on the street when the accident happened.

Anyone who might have information is asked to call Bayonne police.
