Jenkinson’s restricts access in Point Pleasant Beach amid lawsuit

Many business owners say the restricted access will make people look for another beach to visit.

Residents and local businesses are expressing disappointment that access to Point Pleasant Beach has been restricted.

Jenkinson’s owns the majority of the beach and has closed all access points along the 1-mile boardwalk.

Padlocks and chains went up this week on the company’s portion of the beach despite the hot summer weather. September is part of the shoulder season, and tourists are known to visit in large numbers on the weekends.

Many business owners say the restricted access will make people look for another beach to visit.

“The local businesses here along the Jersey Shore rely on the beaches to draw people from the northern towns and western towns that come in for the day trip. So not having access to one of the most beautiful areas in the world really is going to impact businesses significantly,” said Jersey Shore Chamber of Commerce Vice President Danielle Wolowitz.

In September of 2020, a 69-year-old man drowned on an unguarded beach at Jenkinson's. The family has since filed a wrongful death lawsuit. However, it is not clear if the closures are because of the ongoing lawsuit.

News 12 reached out to Jenkinson's for further comment but did not hear back. However, a person who answered the main number confirmed beach access will remain closed - including on weekends.
